Product Description

The golden age of African fingerpicking guitar was in the 1950s and 1960s. The great players and recording artists of that time included Jean Bosco Mwenda and Losta Abelo from Zaire and George Mukabi from Kenya. Guitarists from other parts of the world have rarely if ever had a chance to learn their songs and playing techniques. On this video their arrangements are taught by John Low, who has lived, worked and studied with African musicians, including those mentioned above. There are some interesting links with American guitar styles but there are just as many differences, including rhythms borrowed from traditional African music and catchy up-beat patterns.African fingerstyle guitar is usually accompanied by rhythms played on a bottle. John Low is accompanied on this DVD by Frans Maathuis and Keith Jackman on bottles. A detailed tab/music instructional booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD.Running time 85 minutesDVD is region 0, playable worldwide.

I had some great times with this DVD (I had it on VHS), I love all the songs John Low and his friends play and learned how to play them and sing them (without understanding anything of course).I agree the level is not too difficult, but it may take some time to really feel the "vibes" of the different songs, especially blending with the melody sung. This video made a friend of mine want to learn the guitar, in a few weeks he was able to play some of those at his pace, not singing at the same time first and them playing and singing them. John Low even became an "idol" amongst us !There are a few mistakes (2 or 3 max) on the tabs but he shows the right way to play the songs, so it shouldn't be a problem.Beautiful songs (all originals from great African guitarists from the past), nice syncopated rhythms, and clear explainations, I really advice this video to anybody. Have fun !
