I purchased this, admittedly old, book for a friend getting into folk guitar. It came in a quick time and packaged well. The content of the book is wonderful, just a bit dated. It contains many folk songs that I had never even heard of. I does however provide a nice approach to learning the guitar. The tabs are written different than what is widely used today where the number rests on the line, instead, in this book, the number rests above the line which was a bit confusing for even me a seventh year player to read. It comes with an old record that presumably has the tracks on it to practice, I didn't get a chance to listen to it as I don't have a record player. The approach used in this book is quite good, and it will allow you to play several folk songs just by learning the I, IV, and V chords. It does a very good job at present the material in a linear building way that wont agitate and discourage the beginner.I rated only average because the book is rather old (1960's or 1970's). Did help to understand a little more about guitar playing but I believe there are better products available.I bought my first guitar with my paper-route money in 1968, when I was 11. I bought a couple of instruction books, which were not especially helpful, and I nearly gave up. I was getting nowhere on the guitar. The next Christmas, my mom gave me Jerry Silverman's book, and suddenly I was on my way. The secret was that Silverman immediately started you playing simple folk songs that you probably already knew very well. You didn't have to start with a lot of theory; you were playing actual songs right away, and you could sing them and accompany yourself. It gave me a huge feeling of real accomplishment. That's not to say he slighted theory, however. For example, his chapter on transposition was clear and easy to understand. I picked up the concept immediately.I moved on pretty quickly to electric guitar and to other styles, but it was this book that gave me the grounding to do everything I've done since on the guitar. So thanks Jerry. I've been playing for over 45 years, and it's fair to say I owe it to you (and to my mom). It's no exaggeration to say that this book changed my life.
