The Browning-Gilchrest Duo's recording "Serenade for flute & guitar" establishes a new direction for Prospect Classics introducing a series of recordings to explore the rich history of music for guitar and other instruments. "Serenade" offers diverse styles of music from baroque to present day - including two first recordings - and covers 250 years of the history of both instruments. "Histoire du Tango," composed in 1987, is Astor Piazzolla's illustration of the development of the tango over the last century starting with the birth of the tango in the waterfront bars and bordellos of Buenos Aires in 1882 to the elevation and acceptance of the tango as a legitimate concert art form of today. The "Concerto, Op. 4, No. 3" by Adam Falckenhagen was first published around 1743 and was composed in a new instrumental style of its day - the "Gallant style"- characterized by simpler harmonies, homophonic texture and more easily accessible melodies. Falckenhagen is considered to be one of the last significant composers for the lute, a close relative of the guitar. and is offered here in its first recording. Mauro Giuliani may be considered to be the most distinguished among guitarist-composers of the guitar's Golden Age (ca. 1790-1850). The lyrical writing for flute and guitar in Giuliani's "Serenade" imitates the "Bel Canto" (beautiful singing) opera style of its day, characterized by graceful melodies supported by simple harmonies. The "Sonatina" by Brazilian Radamés Gnattali was composed in 1959 and dedicated to the legendary Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida. Gnattali's writing incorporates textures and colors of Brazilian folk, popular, and jazz styles within the more traditional European classical forms.
