Product Description

This highly enjoyable 14 track CD contains the swinging gypsy guitar music of Rodolphe Raffalli, who interprets the compositions of Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday, Charles Trenet, Al Jolson, Charles Aznavour and others. Raffalli includes one original song on the CD and is joined by Christian Escoude, Florin Niculescu, Max Robin, Philippe "Doudou" Cuillerier and Antonio Licusati.

Raffalli is one of my favorite gypsy-style players. This quartet is hot. They become a quintet for a few tracks where Florin Nicolescu's violin-playing adds a transcendent second soloist. Otherwise, its all Raffalli, ably backed by some great gypsy jazz veterans.Raffalli doesn't bowl you over with speed like so many other players of this style. However, he has enough technique to do what he wants. Its hard to describe his style, when he plays long lines he sounds like he is playing more across the fingerboard rather than up and down the neck - if that makes sense. He is not flawless with his intonation, yet the physical, percussive nature of his playing, rough edges included, adds to the individuality of his playing. And, he's an eclectic player with classical training, who has a flair for elegance. On the other hand, if you listen to the raucus 'Je me voyais deja' - the tune swings so hard it seems to careen right off the road, so to speak. You may not fall in love with Raffalli instantly, but his playing will really grow on you. Definitely worth having.
